In this first week, we'll take a quick look at all the consonant sounds of American English and take a quiz to find out which sounds are the most difficult for you. In later weeks, we'll practice each of the consonant sounds in more depth.

This week, you'll learn how you can use a technique called shadowing, and here's some advice from successful English learners on how to improve your pronunciation.

So what are consonants? They are sounds where the air

coming up from your lungs meet some obstacle.

The first sounds in the words; time, sand, and man are consonants. As we're practicing, please remember that we're talking about sounds, not letters.

They're not always the same. For example, the first sounds in fine and phone are the same, even though they're spelled in different ways, and the first sounds in cat and city are different, even though they're both spelled with the letter C. We hope you enjoy practicing the consonant sounds of American English.
