Here is the last question to this episode of Guess What I'm Thinking. Contestants, what are your final answers? >> You're hungry? >> Sorry. >> [SOUND] >> You worry that you eat too much junk food? >> Not quite. >> You're thinking about giving a report? >> You're right! >> There are many types of reports. Some reports are written, such as an essay or research paper for your teacher. Other reports are spoken, an oral
presentation in front of many people. Compositions and
speeches may seem completely different. But they do share an important similarity,
structure. They are organized in the same way. There are three parts. The introduction,
the body and the conclusion. This structure is like a burger. The introduction is the top bun
which tells the audience the topic, the main idea that you will talk or
write about. The middle has lots of
juicy details like cheese, meat, and vegetables. Finally, there's a bottom bun
including a review of the main points. Let's look at business psychology example. Maybe you're introducing
the types of shoppers. One type is the target shooter, this is someone who has a shopping
list of specific items to check off. Another type is the bargain hunter,
looking for the cheapest prices in town. Last but not least, there is the impulse
buyer who falls in love with eye candy, any product that catches their attention. The concluding point is that awareness of these three shopping styles will lead to an increase
in the company's profit. Or maybe you must take American history,
and one of the assignments is to give
a presentation about historical landmarks. You're introducing important
landmarks in New York City. The first one is the New York Stock
Exchange building on Wall Street. In addition, there is a sprawling
beauty of Central Park. Carnegie Hall is a prestigious venue for
classical and pop music concerts. A final one is the Statue of Liberty,
the quintessential symbol of freedom. Your concluding point is that these
world famous icons have turned New York into one of the most important,
most popular cities in the world. A whole complete burger
has all three parts. Of course, the middle is the delicious,
nutritious, most important part. In a speech or composition, this is the information
that you want your audience to learn. However, it's not whole if
there is no introduction or conclusion because the bun
holds your ideas together. >> Congratulations. >> Thank you so much. Can I get some fries to
go with that burger?
