Speaker 1:
In this video, we will look at the second type of long answer question in the speaking section of PTE
Academic, which is retell lecture. In this question type, you listen to a lecture on an academic topic and
then retell it in your own words. While listening, you can take notes using the erasable note board
booklet. You have 10 seconds to review the notes before speaking and then 40 seconds to retell the
lecture. There are three to four of these in the test.
Speaker 1:
Retell lecture items test your speaking skills and these are assessed in three areas. Content, do you
describe the main key ideas of the lecture and their relationships, provide details and examples, and
give a conclusion or implications? Oral fluency, do you speak smoothly, effortlessly, and naturally?
Pronunciation, is your speech clear and easy to understand?
Speaker 1:
Let's listen to an example of this item type by Miguel. Firstly, he listens to the lecture and then he retells
it.
Speaker 2:
Ecuador is a Latin American country which straddles the equator and is divided into four distinct
geographic regions which are the highlands, the coast, the Amazon and the Gallapagos Islands. This
geographic diversity and its accompanying variance in altitude results in a range of climates, including
subtropical, tropical and temperate regions. This combination makes Ecuador one of 17 mega
biodiverse countries. In fact, it has the most bio-diversity per square kilometer of any nation. This is
most evident in the Amazonic regions and in the world famous Gallapagos Islands.
Speaker 2:
The latter were visited by Charles Darwin in 1835, and were integral in the writing of Origin of the
Species. Ecuador's location on the western coast of South America means that it sits on the Ring of Fire,
which is an area characterised by active volcanoes and earthquakes. Ecuador has over 20 active
volcanoes, including the world's highest active volcano, Cotopaxi. But there has not been a serious
eruption in modern years. Earthquakes are common in Ecuador and a 2016 earthquake devastated the
northern coastal region.
Miguel:
The speaker discussed the geography of Ecuador, which is a country in Latin America. He described the
four regions and a range of altitudes and climates. The Amazon and the Andes are both in Ecuador. He
said that Ecuador is one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world, and Charles Darwin visited
Ecuador to observe the animals. He mentioned that Ecuador has a large number of volcanoes and it
experiences earthquakes often. The last serious earthquake was in 2016.
Speaker 1:
We will look at the skills that you need for this item type later in the course. For now, here are some
general tips for retell lecture item types. Tip one, take notes carefully. Due to the length, it won't be
possible to remember all the content of the lecture and you need to take clear notes to help you
remember the content. Tip two, avoid translating. Write all your notes in English and try to think in

English as you listen and as you speak. This helps you avoid including mistranslations in your retelling.
The more you avoid translating, the clearer your speech is. Tip three, organize your reply carefully. A
good idea is to follow the same order as the lecture. This means that your retelling is clear and cohesive.
