In this video, we will look at the third item type in the speaking section of PTE Academic, Describe
Image. Describe Image is the first of the long-answer item types. You'll see an image, which may be a
graph, a map, a picture, a process diagram, or a table. You will have 25 seconds to study the image and
then 40 seconds to describe it. There are six to seven of these in the test. Describe Image tests your
speaking skills in three areas.
Jose:
Content. Do you describe the key elements of the image, their relationships, possible developments,
and give a conclusion or implications?
Jose:
Oral fluency. Do you speak smoothly and naturally?
Jose:
Pronunciation. Is your speech clear and easy to understand?
Jose:
Let's listen to an example of Shaoling trying this item type.
Shao Ling:

We will look at the skills needed to answer this item type later in the course. For now here are some tips
to help you answer the Describe Image items in PTE Academic.
Jose:
Tip 1: Identify the main features. To do this, think about what is happening and what are the most
significant details. This helps ensure that you include all the necessary information and cover the
requirements for the content grade.
Jose:
Tip 2: Organize your information logically. In the example you just heard, Shaoling used an introduction,
a body, and a conclusion to organize her information. This helps as it means that the description of the
image is easy to understand and clear.
Jose:
Tip 3: Develop your vocabulary. You need specific vocabulary to describe these types of images, graphs
and tables. This includes vocabulary to show place, movement, and trends, which helps you effectively
describe the images.
