Karen's asked a really good question about
online discussions and creating boundaries around the interaction or in other words,
how to manage them effectively. >> Okay.
>> So an example she's given is someone maybe responding
at 3 in the morning. >> Mm-hm.
>> Should I be going in there responding straightaway. >> Mm-hm. >> That kind of thing. How to setup something that will
get it to be very interactive but so that you don't wear yourself out. >> Right, so what the facilitator
of the discussion forum, or the teacher, should do in
order to manage their own time, I suppose, and also facilitate
the discussion at the same time. I completely agree that boundaries
are definitely important and it's actually about managing the expectations
of the students more than anything. There's no clear cut answer as to
what the boundaries should be but I do firmly believe that you should
set out those expectations right at the start for your students. So the discussion forums, we know they
can go on at any time of the day, any day of the week
>> Which is the beauty of them. >> Which is the beauty of them, especially
the flexibility that online learning does provide but then it depends on that
particular facilitator really or the course or the program or
what kind of requirements they have. So for example, when I teach
a fully online course, which I do, I'll say from the beginning, I'll respond
to, whether it's a Q&A forum, for example, or any other forum within
48 hours on weekdays but on weekends it might be 72 hours. Now that might mean that on Sundays I
actually respond much faster than 48 hours, I might respond within two hours,
especially if it's a Q&A, question answer kind of format where
it's questions about the assessment or the activities and
they would want a response very quickly. But at least the students know to
expect their response within, say, 48 hours on weekdays, but on weekends,
it might be up to 72 hours, just because I want to set those expectations that
clearly I might be responding quicker. But at the same time,
it also depends letting them know which forums you are going to
be more maybe engaged with as well. So like I said, a question and
answer forum yes, you want to be answering their questions. Again, but you don't have to
answer them right away, but within the boundaries you've set up. But if you have lots of other
discussions happening where you're actually encouraging the students
to respond to one another, then you don't necessarily have to
respond to every student's post. You might be responding more at the start
of the course where you're trying to set up a community and set up the expectation that people
are going to respond in certain ways. But you don't necessarily need
to respond to everybody's post. That just wouldn't
necessarily be manageable for you unless you had a very small class. >> And actually I had a case of a teacher
in one of the courses I was overseeing, again, in the situation where there were
answering students queries instantly. And so, it stopped all of the conversation
in the thread and became this one-on-one with each individual student-
>> That could happen, yeah. >> With that person and
they were run rugged. So, I think you made a really good point. It's not necessarily boundaries but
expectations. >> Yeah.
>> And one of the things that I've done in my online course is at the start of the
course I have a little document that says what we expect of you as a student in
this course, in the discussions and what you can expect
from me as the teacher. >> That's very good.
>> So that it's all laid out in front of the
course and everyone knows what's going on. And the other thing is,
I think it's not just about time but it's how we talk to each
other in the forum. So it pays to, I guess, model the behavior
that you expect your students to use in that space,
by citing any images or quotes properly. >> Right, yep. >> By setting the tone, the type of language, not necessarily
text language from the old days. But is it a colloquial,
sort of casual forum? Is it something really academic? And just leading by example, I think. But the worst thing that can happen is for
you not to tell students what to expect. And then they start missing you and
panicking and thinking you're not watching and
not coming back. >> Well, especially if the students that
you have have taken other online course where those particular expectations
might have been different. The previous instructors
they might have had might have been responding in different
ways at different times. Maybe they only responded on weekends,
for example, and you definitely only want to
respond on weekdays. So, that's why it's really important
at the beginning that you set up those expectations, and then generally,
people are happy about it. >> Mm.
