You're no doubt familiar with
the question, which came first? The chicken or the egg? The answer is neither and both. The same applied to
the question which comes first? Reading or writing? Effective writing begins with reading. And scholarly writing would
hardly count as scholarly, if it ignored what other scholars
have written on the topic. That is why research publication involves
three important efforts, reading, research and writing. Reading discipline-specific literature
develops expertise in that discipline as new advances are better understood. Additionally, thorough reading can
also improve writing skills and the quality of scientific research. Therefore, the purpose of reading
topical literature is two-fold. First, it can help you
develop your expertise as you will broaden your
knowledge of specific topics. And second and most importantly,
reading academic literature can help you develop a sense of what
it means to be a research writer. Reading and writing proceeds in cycles. You need relevant literature to inform
your writing whether a dissertation, research paper or grant proposal. And your writing becomes
reading matter for others. The process often does not end there. Another cycle may be triggered. You need feedback from reviewers and
revise your writing in response and so on. An appreciation for good writing is developed through careful
reading of many articles and books. Reading is important to become familiar
with current research in that field as well as to form a truly educated
opinion on the scientific subject. Reading and understanding research papers is a skill which every single
scientist needs to learn. You can learn it too, but like any
skill it takes patience and practice. The process will go much
faster as you gain experience. When reading critically you need
to pay attention to at least three different things. The topic matter, the basic information
contained in the text, the quality of claims made about that information and the
matter in which the claims arepPresented. In this module, you will see what it
means to be constructively critical as a reader and how this skill can be applied
to become self-critical as a writer
