Hi, I am Darya Buktoyarova, I work as an information resources
expert at Clarivate Analytics. Today, we're going to talk about patents. Now as researchers, we often need
patent information whether it's for a report or simply to understand what is
going on in the industry or maybe to find an industry partner, a company that might
be interested in patents like ours. However, if you ever tried looking at
patents, you know that patent information is a little bit different from academic
publications and there are some challenges that prevent us from working
easily with patent information. For example, there's a lot of
patents in the world, currently, there are about 12 million patents
being registered annually. All these patents are registered in the
language of the country where the patent office is located, so this means
that they can be in any language. Now if you're talking about
academic publications, let's say that you find three really
relevant, really important articles and they're from a Chinese author,
a Korean author and a Japanese author. If these publications
are really important, then the chances are they're going to
be in English and you can read them. However, if we are dealing with patent's
and you find one patent from China, one patent from Korea, and one patent from Japan,
then you'll need to know three languages. Not always possible. Finally, even if you find
a patent in English or in some other language
that you know very well, it's still going to be written not
exactly in plain, simple language. It's going to be written in what people
sometimes jokingly refer to as Patentese. Which is very technical language but
also very vague, so that no one can understand what
the invention really is and no one can steal the invention,
that's basically the purpose. In a nutshell, this means that
even if you know the science and you know the language, you're not
guaranteed that you'll understand easily any patent that you will find. Now, how to deal with all of this. Right now we are going to look
at a solution that is called the Derwent Innovation Index and
this is a special patent database. This is a subscription database on the Web
of Science platform that you are already familiar with and
it contains more than 45 million patents from 50 most trusted most,
important patent agencies in the world. The information goes back to 1963, it's quite an old resource,
so it's a lot of information. Which is actually good because since you
already saw the Web of Science platform and some of you might have even worked
with it, you know that it is quite easy to narrow this information down to what
exactly you need for your research or for your lab report. Now let's look at all of
this on a practical example. Let's see what patents are available
right now on self-driving cars. This is basically cars that drive
automatically without a driver, a very popular concept now, and
many companies, many research labs are developing solutions, so
quite a curious area to look at. What we are going to do is we'll go
to the Web of Science platform and we will select Derwent Innovations Index
as our database. Now we can conduct the search, and we
can structure the search very simply, or we can do quite a complex
search as I have here. When we hit Search, what we see is all the patents that
have to do with self-driving cars. Now, let's be honest, not all of this is
going to be equally interesting to us, and it is a lot of information. What we're going to do is we're going
to select the specific discipline from the standpoint from which we
will be analyzing this information. Let's see we're only interested in
the engineering side of things, we don't want any computer science data or
some other disciplines. We just select engineering and
now instantly, we see only the patents that
pertain to this particular area. Now what we see is we can look
at the most recent patents, so what is being patented right now, or
we can analyze most cited patents. These are basically the fundamental
inventions in this area that everyone has to cite, so
this is quite useful. What we can also do, right away,
is look at the companies that have the biggest portfolios
in this area of research and we can go deep down to
the portfolios themselves. We can see, for example, what is the
difference between the Honda portfolio and the Mitsubishi portfolio, what
are the particular spheres of interest and how it correlates with what we are doing. If we find a particular patent
that we are interested in, we can see right away the information
that I already described to you. We read the descriptive title and
we read the summary in English. This is quite simple,
quite easy to understand. If there are any graphs or tables or schemes in the patent,
they are going to be here as well, and if you actually do want to go to
the original, here's the link. This is actually a very good example. This particular patent is clearly
very important and it's in Japanese. If you don't have any additional
resources to help us understand it, we probably cannot, or lot of us cannot. This is what I wanted to reiterate again, there are many free patents
available on the web. But if we are only using free web
resources to do the patent analysis, this is what we get and sometimes we
cannot even get there because if we just do a simple search in English,
we will not be able to find this patent. As a result,
we might miss some very serious and very important inventions that
are critical for our research, so I strongly recommend that you
use specific patent solutions. Because they can save you time and
they can also give you some very useful information, they can give
you information that is very detailed. As in this case, or
what is this patent talking about? What is this particular invention? What's its advantages over
other inventions in this area? It can also give you very
high level information, what's going on in the industry,
how our inventions and research fit in, and
who we can partner with.
