For this module, there are a three suggested reading passages. Each comes from different subject matter (technology, sociology, and biology) in order to give you experience reading and comprehending different topics. The words in this glossary will be helpful to the understanding of those passages.

Media and Technology passage

1. Previous iterations of the word processing software weren't as user-friendly as the current version.

iteration: (noun) the repetition of a process or an utterance; a new version of computer hardware or software
2. Social stratification in the United States is usually divided into three classes: upper class, middle class, and lower class.

stratification: (noun) the arrangement or classification of something into different groups.
3. The city's infrastructure does not adequately support its growing population.

infrastructure: (noun) the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise
4. Children of lower socioeconomic status tend to have less exposure to new technology than those in middle or upper classes.

socioeconomic status: (noun) the measure of an individual's or family's economic and social position in relation to others

Genetically Engineered Mosquitoes passage

1. Members of a biological family usually share many of the same genes.

genes: (noun) a unit of heredity which is transferred from a parent to offspring and is held to determine some characteristic of the offspring.
2. Many people refuse to eat food that has been genetically engineered in any way and will buy organic food instead.

genetically engineered: (adjective) describes an organism whose genes have been directly manipulated using biotechnology
3. The warehouse team is planning to execute the company's new plans to increase safety for its workers next week.

execute: (verb) to carry out or put into effect
4. Some types of cancer are caused by mutations in chromosomes.

mutation: (noun) a change in an organism's genes or chromosomes

Digital DNA passage

1. Senior citizens tend to have a higher level of economic vulnerability due to medical expenses.

vulnerability: (noun) being exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.
2. Angry protesters sabotaged public property, including street signs and the faces of buildings.

sabotage: (verb) to deliberately destroy, damage, or obstruct something
3. Viruses are malicious computer programs.

malicious: (adjective) intending to do harm
