[MUSIC PLAYING] SPEAKER: A thesis statement describes your position on a particular issue. It is not a list of facts, a summary, or a question. It should be clear and specific. A thesis statement guides the remaining content of the essay as you defend your position with supporting details. Your goal in writing a good thesis statement is to answer two key reader questions-- what's your point and why should I care? What does a thesis statement look like? Before we look at some good examples of theses, we're going to work our way through some poorly written examples. Take a minute to read these statements. Regular exercise is good. National parks around the United States are important. To Kill a Mockingbird is an American novel. You already know that these are not good examples. Our thesis statement shouldn't be a fact, a summary, or a question. With this in mind, why do you think that these are poorly written examples? If you picked A, you're right. None of these sentences would make effective theses, because each of these is more or less a statement of fact. Of course, we could debate some of the details here. But in general, most people would assume and believe these statements to be true. Because of that, these statements don't have much potential to be a good thesis. Let's take a look at some more poorly written examples of thesis statements. There are many ways in which one can get regular exercise without having to go to a gym. There are many things that could be done to protect national parks around the United States. To Kill a Mockingbird is an influential novel for several different reasons. Let's think about the purpose we discussed for a good thesis statement. A thesis informs the reader about a writer's specific opinion about a debatable issue. Do these examples fulfill that purpose? Why or why not? B is the correct answer. These thesis statements are better than the previous examples. But they're not quite good yet. The problem here is that they're vague. The reader doesn't
have a clear idea about the author's position on the issue or where the essay is going. Also, while these statements are a bit better, they are still statements that most people would more or less accept as facts. Let's take a look at one final group of example thesis statements. Regular exercise is crucial to maintain a healthy lifestyle, because it helps manage an ideal weight, prevents disease, and can increase energy levels. The federal government should pass strict conservation laws to protect our national parks in the United States so that future Americans can continue to learn about and enjoy nature. The depiction of prejudice as influence over intelligence and reason in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is still relevant to modern American society. It took us a while, but we finally reached our goal. Hopefully, you are able to see that all three of these sentences are good examples of a thesis statement. Think again about our definition and purpose for a good thesis statement. These three sentences are not facts, summaries, or questions. They also inform the reader about the writer's specific opinion about a debatable issue. Writing a good thesis statement takes practice. That's why it's important to remember that it doesn't have to be perfect the first time. It is acceptable to come back to it and make changes, just like we did with the examples in this video.
