SPEAKER 1: Today we'll learn some strategies to improve your reading speed. Increasing your reading speed will take time and lots of practice. However, there are a few things you can do to speed up that process. Let's look at those techniques now. First, before you even approach the text, make sure you're sitting in an area with very few distractions. Noises, conversations, and music can make it more challenging to concentrate while reading. Next, look over the text's organizational structure before you read. Review tables of content, abstracts, introductions and conclusions, and headings before you read, so that your brain can anticipate the information it will need to process. Important information is generally located at the beginning and the end of chapters, paragraphs, and sentences. Skim over these sections before you begin reading. Once you start reading, read at a speed that is not too fast and not too slow. Good reading fluency is reading quickly to understand the information sufficiently. You should aim to comprehend about 70% to 80% of what you read. If you take the time to process every single word, you should speed up. If you're having difficulty understanding the text, you should read a little slower. You may need to adjust your speed a few times while reading a single text. Don't use your finger or other markers to follow the lines of text. This causes your eyes
to move in a way that's unnatural for reading. Instead, try to focus your eyes in the middle of a line of text and use your peripheral vision to guess words at the beginning or the end of a line of text. If the words you see on the page don't match your expectations, it's OK to go back and refocus your eyes at the beginning or end of that line to make sure you read the information correctly. Don't stop at unknown words. This is a difficult strategy to stick to when reading in your second language, as you're likely to encounter unfamiliar vocabulary. When this happens, do your best to use context clues from the surrounding sentences to determine the meaning of the word if you're unable to, underline or highlight the word so that you can look it up in a dictionary later. Finally, do timed reading practices. As with any skill, the more you practice, the better you will become. Timed reading practices, like the ones you complete at the end of each week in this course, are a great way to measure your reading speed progress and become a faster and more fluent reader. Try out these techniques to improve your reading speed as you work your way through this course.
