Let's practice saying the consonant sounds of American English.
I'll say the sounds and some example words and you repeat.
You'll also see a phonemic symbol for each sound.
These symbols are sometimes called IPA, which stands for International Phonetic Alphabet.
We'll use phonemic symbols because they give us a clear way to represent sounds.
I'm sure you've noticed that in English spelling, letters don't always represent the same sound.
For example, the letter C might spell the sounds /k/, /s/, or sometimes even /tf/.
Phonemic symbols are written with slash marks around them.
Now, let's practice the consonant sounds.
/P/, pan, spot, paper, cup. /B/, box, brother, above, rub.
/T/, teach, tree, better, taught.
/D/, dance, dream, middle, sad.
/K/, cat, sky, ticket, black.
/G/, gas, green, bigger, bag.
/F/, fish, photograph, free, laugh.
/V/, very, vegetable, never, leave.
/Th/, think, three, healthy, mouth.
