Welcome back to English for
Management and Leadership. In the last video,
we shared some general tips for a successful conference call or
web meeting. Conference calls are difficult enough, but
adding another factor such as conference calling in another language adds a whole
new element of complexity, doesn't it? When I teach native English speakers how
to navigate global conference calls, I advise them to speak slowly and
clearly, to avoid jargon, idioms and sophisticated vocabulary. And to offer checks of
comprehension such as, is everyone clear on
what needs to be done? Does anyone need further clarification? For you, as a learner of English, there are things that you
can do to help as well. In our previous video on conference
calling, we mentioned the need for a quiet space with few distractions. This is especially important for
a conference call in another language. Listening comprehension is tricky
enough without background noise and interruptions. Video meetings are a little easier
because we have the benefit of seeing facial expressions,
hand gestures and body language, all things that we cannot
consider when we talk over the phone. When speaking on a conference call,
a good rule of thumb is to remember, KISS, Keep it Simple and Short. Organize your thoughts into short, simple chunks that are easy to deliver and
easy to understand. Prepare some key phrases
that will help you, ask for clarification, repetition or
definitions during the call. These are especially important because
I don't understand can mean many, many things. I don't understand could
mean you need clarification. In other words,
you did not understand what was said and you would like someone to rephrase it or
say it in another way. I don't understand,
could mean you need repetition. In other words,
you didn't hear it properly and you would like someone to repeat it. I don't understand could also
mean that you need a definition. This is helpful, because sometimes
you understand everything, except for one word, or idiom. Simply asking for a definition,
what does tiger team mean, helps your audience understand exactly
what it is that is causing confusion. Finally, I don't understand could also
mean you don't understand the content. That's quite different
from a language barrier. But, also requires specific
phrasing to make clear. In the next video, you'll learn
some of these kinds of phrases. In the meantime, let's wrap up this portion of the lesson
with our takeaways from this video. First of all,
find a quiet space without distractions. Use chunking to keep it simple and short. Practice related vocabulary and
key phrases, not just I don't understand. Finally before we go, did you notice
the small talk in our opening video before the meeting got started? Remember that global meetings can be
great opportunities for personal and intercultural connections even
when we're miles and oceans apart. Embrace the cross border opportunity
to build those meaningful connections because great relationships make work so
much more enjoyable don't they? Thanks for watching English for
Management and Leadership.
