Read about different versions of Romeo and Juliet:

The doomed love story between Romeo and Juliet has inspired film-makers from the earliest days of the cinema. The silent Romeo and Juliet was one of three versions of the story produced in the USA, the UK and Italy in 1908.

New productions followed regularly through the twentieth century. Two of the most celebrated are Franco Zefferelli’s 1968 Romeo and Juliet and Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 Romeo + Juliet.

The story has also been adapted and filmed in countries around the world. The 1960 Czechoslovakian film Romeo, Julie a tma (Romeo, Juliet and Darkness) set the story during the Second World War. There have also been versions of the story filmed in former Yugoslavia, Spain, India and France.

Perhaps the most famous adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet story though is the 1961 musical West Side Story which sets the action among the gangs of New York where a young couple from rival communities fall in love with tragic consequences.

Not all adaptations are quite as tragic as the original though. 2011’s Gnomeo and Juliet tells the story of garden gnomes from neighbouring gardens who fall in love against the odds.

Musicians too have been inspired by Romeo and Juliet. Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet is perhaps the most famous example.

In pop music, Dire Straits’ song Romeo and Juliet may be the best known song inspired by the play and Radiohead’s Exit Music (For a Film) was written for the Baz Luhrmann film mentioned earlier.
