DORIS DIPPOLD: Culture is often compared to an iceberg, of which the largest part is underwater. What’s actually visible of culture are the customs and traditions people follow and the behaviours they display. So, the things that people do in their daily or in their professional lives. But a lot of the iceberg is hidden below the water. The beliefs and the values people hold, the assumptions they make, the expectations people have of life and of what constitutes good and appropriate behaviour. If you only know about the things above the surface, you only know half the story and will have more difficulties of interacting appropriately in the professional cultural context that you are facing.

You will also have more difficulties to know what drives your own behaviours. So, the aim of this course is to provide you with strategies of recognising what is hidden below the surface and of managing yourself and others in relation to what is above the ground.
