Hello welcome back to to our mooc Oral Communication for EFL Learners I am Zhang Wenxia from Tsinghua University 's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Today I will guide you through Unit 5 to learn how to talk about good times and bad times in English Glenn has just given a very brief introduction to the unit Before we start the text Let's think about the the following two questions When will you be happy and unhappy What are your good times and bad times Hello Tom again and in today's lecture I would like you to read the text first afterwards follow me sentence by sentence If you have any trouble understanding read the text again and again until you do Let's begin There can be tough times The weather is getting worse the traffic is always overcrowded and the tests can be really difficult These may make you sad Sometimes you are in a bad mood and sometimes you feel happy You may feel better when it’s a sunny day or you find a way out of a problem That is happiness So how do we find the path of happiness This seems to be the million dollar question There are tons of books on the subject The more you read the more confused you are Evaluating what makes us happy might take more time and energy and actually make us unhappy We may look at ourselves and decide what we like and don't like and set about making changes It doesn't have to be big changes Look in the mirror and be glad If you don't like what you see change it Make the solution that simple You may be saying Sure that sounds easy It is always easier to talk about problems than to take the obvious actions to fix them But for the most part things are as difficult or as easy as we determine them to be Sometimes we just make things harder than necessary Being unhappy takes no courage or effort True achievement lies in struggling to be happy As we grow and progress we will realize who we really are and what makes us happy and what we are responsible for Steve Jobs said Good times hard times but never bad times Now I want you to follow me sentence by sentence Try reading aloud It might help Now I would like to explain a few words and expressions after which my Chinese colleague will explain in more detail in Chinese The million dollar question We use this phrase quite often in the West We say that something is a million dollar question when it's a very important question that needs answering Imagine the answer to the question means you are gonna win a million dollars it's a lot of money so it's a very important question Fix a problem Now we all know about problems in our lives Small things big things many problems But to be able to fix a problem means that you move from being broken to being fixed This means that the problem is solved Tons of books In the paragraph we spoke about there being tons of books about happiness Now a ton is a unit of measurement of weight However tons of books means just lots of something So you could say I have tons of books I have tons of pens This just means a lot of something
