After your personal introduction, you move on the assessed item types. The first is Read Aloud. These
items require to read a short text aloud. You first have 30 to 40 seconds to read the text and prepare.
You will then have 30 to 40 to read the text aloud.
Speaker 1:
The texts are academic texts and may be on a range of topics. Read Aloud questions test speaking, and
reading skills. And there are 6 to 7 of these in the speaking section of the test.

Your speaking grade for this item type is based on the following. Content, do you include all the words
and no extra words? Oral fluency, do you speak smoothly and naturally? Pronunciation, is your speech
clear and easy to understand?

Let's listen to an example of Nisha attempting a practice read aloud item type. Look at the short text
that you see on the screen and listen to Nisha read it.
Speaker 2:
Falsetto is a vocal register produced by vibrating vocal cords and is used for notes which are beyond the
available register. It's relatively uncommon in English, in fact it's often confused with and used
interchangeably with head voice, and it's most common use is by male singers. However, it's possible for
women to sing in falsetto.

For now, here are some tips for the Read Aloud item type in the speaking section of PTE Academic.
Speaker 1:
Tip 1 - Read all the words in the text. Don't add any extra words. In order to maximize your grade in
content you need to say all the words without adding or deleting. To get all points for content, you must
read all the words in the correct order.
Speaker 1:
Tip 2 - Consider punctuation. Use punctuation to help you decide where to pause. This is an important
part of scoring. Short pauses can help you speak at a natural rate. Be careful though these pauses
should be short. Long pauses can negatively impact your score and if you stop speaking for more than 3
seconds, the recording will stop.
