Activity #1

This suggested speed reading activity uses a text from biology textbook titled "21.2 Threats to Biodiversity" by Fowler, S., Roush, R. & Wise, J. (2017).  A key component to increasing your reading speed is to determine your current reading speed. To do this, time yourself as you read the article at the link below. Then, without looking at the article, answer the comprehension questions in the following quiz. Your reading speed is the rate at which you can read and still get about 70-80% of the comprehension questions correct. Visit the Glossary to review key terms in this article.

Activity #2

To improve your reading speed, you should do repeated timed readings of the same text. Choose the amount of time it took you to read the article the first time in Attempt #1 on the chart below. Also write down your quiz on the comprehension quiz at the bottom where it says Reading Comprehension Score.

Next, read the article again. Try to adjust your speed as necessary to maintain 70-80% comprehension. Then take the second quiz which will have different quiz questions. As you do more repeated readings, log your new time on the reading log. You should start to see your reading speed increase.
