Synthesize means to look for similarities or differences between two or more sources and then apply that information to a specific task.

In your university classes, you will listen to many different ideas about one particular topic. In order to have a good understanding of that topic, it will be necessary to make connections between the lectures and identify the similarities and differences between them.

  • When listening to two lectures on the same topic, use a T-chart to organize your notes.
  • Look for similar ideas between the two lectures.
  • Look for contrasting ideas between the two lectures.
  • Look for details or examples that are provided in one lecture but not the other.
