There are many different effective methods for note taking. Your lesson video focuses on one specific method: The Cornell method. The Cornell method was developed by Walter Pauk in 1949 at Cornell University in response to poor student test performance. The system has been adopted by many schools and individuals as the preferred note-taking method. The Cornell method can help you organize and process information, work on assignments, build critical thinking skills and prepare for tests, but it is not the only method for note taking. The outline method and idea web are two more great options. Read about them and download templates below. You will practice using one of these methods in your peer feedback assignment this week.

Paraphrasing:

Whichever method that you choose, you should paraphrase all of the information that you write down in your notes. Paraphrase means to write the information using your own words rather than the exact words that are in the text. Paraphrasing the information in your notes will help you better understand the material. Paraphrasing forces you to think about and comprehend the ideas rather than just copying words that you see but don't necessarily understand.

Note Taking Methods

Cornell Method:

This method contains two columns: a "cue" column and a "notes" column. It also contains a space at the bottom for the student to write a summary about the reading passage.

Outline Method:

This method uses a specific structure to organize main ideas and supporting details. Main ideas are located at the top and indicated by using roman numerals. Supporting details appear underneath the main ideas and are indicated by using capital letters. Finally, examples fall underneath the details and are indicated by using numbers.

Idea Web:

This method works well for visual learners. In this method, the main idea goes in a circle in the middle of the page. Supporting details are connected to the main idea and examples are connected to those details. The notes make a diagram that looks similar to a spider's web.
